Viale Roma is one of the most important historical roads in Venaria. Already referred to as Strada di Torino in the 1760 Hunting Charter, it connected the village with Altessano. From 1887, it was known as the Altessano-Turin Tramway Road, then Viale della Stazione and finally, in 1931, it took its current name in honour of the Italian capital.
Running alongside the road is the Corona Verde eco-nature trail, which follows the banks of the River Stura di Lanzo.
Despite being so close, Venaria and Altessano — formerly known as Altessano Superiore and Inferiore — have maintained their distinct administrative and cultural identities over time. Viale Roma has always been a sort of “neutral zone”, a meeting point between the two communities, which have historically been separate but never hostile.
The road is also known as stra dla Galopada (“the galloping road”) because, in the 18th century, the royal carriages bound for the Royal Palace would set off from Altessano at a gallop, racing each other to Venaria, to the amazement and concern of the inhabitants.
Venaria Reale central railway station, designed by the engineer Capuccio, was officially opened on 7 March 1871. Its architecture is unique: the two-storey passenger building is perpendicular to the tracks, with access via a flight of stairs.
Today, together with Rigola station, Viale Roma station is a strategic point for the town's mobility, included in the Metropolitan Railway Service and connected to the Turin metropolitan area network, facilitating both commuting and tourist travel.
